In 2001, a voluntary girl’s unit was set up in Edmonton, AB. They started volunteering at the Cross Cancer Institute, the University of Alberta hospital, and later at Ronald McDonald House and Kid’s Kottage. The unit began with house parents and two girls, and two more girls arrived three months later. Weekly Sunday chapel services were started at the University of Alberta hospital, together with the Edmonton Mennonite Guest Home.
The girls continue to volunteer at the Cross Cancer Institute, in the gift shop and wig salon etc. At the University of Alberta Hospital, they help with wayfinding, volunteer at the Mazankowski Heart Institue doctors’ offices and at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. They also hand out food hampers at the Edmonton Food Bank. The girls sing at the Edmonton Mennonite Guest Home on Tuesday evenings and at the Healing Gardens in the University Hospital on Sunday, besides at a few senior care facilities each month.
