Winnipeg, MB

In 1969, two women of the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite had the vision to set up a family style home to give emergency care for children who were waiting for more permanent placing. They purchased a house on 909 Bannatyne Ave. Various women and girls volunteered, taking care of the household. The need was so great for these children in transition that the board purchased another home on Glenwood Crescent. These two homes ran for awhile until they purchased a larger house on Eastgate.

Bannatyne Children’s Home

1969 – 1999

Started in 1969 under Northern Missions. Changed to CPS in 1991.

In 1999, CPS purchased a larger house in the Charleswood area and moved the Bannatyne household there. The Bannatyne Children’s Home then closed and the house was sold.

Glenwood Children’s Home

1969 – 1995

Started in 1969 under Northern Missions. Changed to CPS in 1991.

In 1995, the Glenwood Children’s Home moved to East Gate. The Glenwood house then closed and sold.

Charleswood Children’s Home

1999 – 2003

CPS purchased a house on Charleswood St in 1999 for giving emergency care to unfortunate children of the city with houseparents and four girls. Because of the restrictions place upon the home by the agency they were working under, they decided to terminate the child care and change their focus of service to volunteering in different institutions in the city. This happened in spring of 2002.

They volunteered at:

  • Winnipeg Harvest – sorting and repackaging commodities and assembling kits for giving out
  • Health Sciences Centre – helping in the gift shop, snack bar, arthritis ward, and children’s ward; flower delivery; escorting visitors,
  • Misericordia Health Centre – helping seniors in the recreation program
  • Ronald McDonald House – preparing food for house guests

East Gate Children’s Home

1995 – 2020

The Eastgate Home started in 1995. The Home was licensed as an emergency shelter for six children ages six and under and staffed by houseparents and four girls. They continued until 2016 when the regulations changed for these children, and they had to close that service. The four girls volunteered at various places:

  • Ronald McDonald House – recreation with residents
  • Hospitals – gift shop, wayfinding, day care, stocking supplies in Emergency,
  • Concordia Hospital – bedside singing

In 2020, the regulations of the pandemic forced them to close. The house was sold in 2022.
