St. John’s, Newfoundland

Newfoundland is an island in the North Atlantic Ocean that boasts of having the farthest east point on the North American continent, Cape Spear. St. John’s is the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador, with a metro population of just over 200,000 people. The ocean is on all sides and influences the climate of St. John’s. The terrain is rugged and not suitable for agriculture, alghough the government is encouraging the agricultural line of work and is willing to subsidize it to help build the economy. There is a wide diversity of people, and it is easy to strike up a conversation.

In 2015, CPS purchased a house and property in St. John’s. They moved the household belongings from Corner Brook. A set of houseparents and 3 boys serve here.

The boys volunteer at Home Again Furniture Bank on Mondays and Fridays, where furniture is delivered to the needy and donations picked up from those who have more than they need.

Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays are spent at the Ches Penny Centre of Hope, which is run by the Salvation Army, working in the kitchen for the community meal program, and in the food bank. The houseparents generally go over the noon hour and help serve the meal. Usually, a song or two is sung after the meal is served.

On Wednesday afternoons, the houseparents and boys usually go to a seniors’ home to sing. They rotate between 5 places, Ruby Manor, Westbury Estates, Tiffany Village, Kenny’s Pond, and Health Science Centre Hospital.

The young men and houseparents volunteer on the first and fourth Saturday afternoons at Cornerstone Ministries, a local church with a program called “Supperbowl” for helping the less fortunate,  Different church groups bring a meal and serve the hungry, and the CPS young men serve coffee, tea, and hot chocolate.

One Friday evening a month at Cornerstone Ministries’ “Coffeehouse,” the unit helps serve a little lunch and hot drinks.

There is time to explore the many hiking trails on this ruggedly beautiful island, have supper over the fire by the ocean, watch sunsets or early morning sunrises, and go fishing or snowshoeing in season. Also to not be forgotten are the icebergs, whales, capelin, and puffins in their respective seasons.

On the weekends the unit and missionaries take turns having church and Sunday school at their house with others who would like to attend. They also attend the Lethbridge congregation once a month for church and a potluck.
