St. John’s, NF

Newfoundland is an island in the North Atlantic Ocean that boasts of having the farthest east point on the North American continent, Cape Spear. St. John’s is the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador, with a population of about 220,000 people. The ocean is on all sides and influences the climate of St. John’s. The terrain is rugged and not suitable for agriculture. There is a wide diversity of people, and it is easy to strike up a conversation.

In 2015, CPS purchased a house and property in St. John’s. They moved the household belongings from the Corner Brook. There are houseparents and two boys. In 2016, they changed to three boys.

The boys volunteer at:

  • Health Science Centre – Bingo, singing, assembling care packs
  • Glenbrook Lodge
  • Ruby Manor
  • New Hope Mission – make and serve meals, clean-up
  • Pleasant View Towers,
  • Wiseman Centre,
  • Restore
  • Home Again Furniture – furniture deliveries and donation pick-up

In the beginning of 2020, the three boys went home because of the regulations due to the pandemic. The houseparents stayed to keep the household going for six months before the boys came back.

At present, they volunteer at:

  • Home Again Furniture – furniture deliveries and donation pick-up
  • Salvation Army Soup Kitchen – helping move to a new facility, working in the soup kitchen and food bank
